This announcement coincides with speculations that Google was going to shut down Gmail due to the spread of a bogus image on social media.
It’s unclear when the service will be available because Musk hasn’t given any more information about it. It is expected to be incorporated into the X app, though.
Nathan McGrady, a senior member of X’s Security Engineering team, inquired about the launch date of Xmail, leading to the confirmation. In response, Musk said that the service is in the works, setting the stage for what would cause a major disruption in the email service industry.
He asked, “When are we making XMail?”
Musk only said, “It’s coming,” in response.
One X user quickly commented, “Lost trust in Gmail. Time to make the switch to Xmail asap!” Another said, “I will use my Gmail as how I use my Hotmail now, for junks,”

Social media strategist Rhea Freeman responded to the story by saying that X’s version of Gmail “might happen” and that “it’ll be interesting to see the uptake” if it does.
“Elon has made huge changes to Twitter and doesn’t seem to have public opinion on side, so whether people will trust X with their email management will be something to watch,” Freeman stated to MailOnline.
Musk has said before that he wants X to become a “everything app” in the long run.
It’s possible that XMail is being developed at xAI, an artificial intelligence-focused company that Musk founded a year ago.
Concerns among internet users were raised by a widely shared post on X that said Gmail would be discontinued. ‘Google is sunsetting Gmail’ was the subject line of an email screenshot that was posted in the post, and it quickly went viral online.
“After years of connecting millions worldwide, enabling seamless communication, and fostering countless connections, the journey of Gmail is coming to a close. As of August 1, 2024, Gmail will officially be sunsetted, marking the end of its service,” the message states.
“This means that as of this date, Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving, or storing emails. The decision to sunset Gmail has been made with careful consideration of the evolving digital landscape and our commitment to providing high-quality, innovative solutions that meet the needs of our users,” the statement continued.
More than 4 million people viewed the screenshot after the tweet provoked a contentious discussion among Gmail users.
Conversely, Google declared on X this past Friday that Gmail “is here to stay” and will not be disappearing. Google recently updated the ‘basic HTML’ Gmail design to a new, more vibrant one. The date of this update was January 2024.
