Pankaj Udhas, the renowned ghazal singer, has passed away at the age of 72 following a long battle with illness.

Around 11 am, Breach Candy hospital’s Pankaj Udhas died. His final rites are tomorrow.
Ghazal and playback vocalist Pankaj Udhas died at 72. The Udhas family said his death on Monday was from a long illness.

Nayaab, Pankaj Udhas’ daughter, posted on Instagram, “With a heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness.”

After Nayaab announced the singer’s death, followers flooded the comments area with condolences. A fan added, “May his soul rest in peace.” “I’m so sorry to hear of your loss, stay strong and please accept my condolences,”a commenter said. “Deepest Condolences and Prayers,” another said.

He died at Breach Candy Hospital at 11 am, a family source claimed. Tuesday will mark his funeral. Pankaj is survived by his wife Farida, children Nayaab and Reva, and singer brothers Nirmal and Manhar.

Pankaj Udhas is best known for singing songs like Chitthi Aayi Hai from Mahesh Bhatt’s 1986 crime thriller Naam, Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai from Pravin Bhatt’s 1998 film Ek Hi Maqsad, Aaj Phir Tumpe from Feroz Khan’s 1988 action thriller Dayavan, Jeeye To Jeeye Kaise from Lawrence D’Souza’s 1991 romantic film Saajan, and Chhupana Bhi Nahi Aata from Abbas-Mustan’s 1993 revenge thriller Baa

His ghazal repertoire includes Aahat (1980) and Na Kajre Ki Dhaar, Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein, Ek Taraf Uska Ghar, and Thodi Thodi Piya Karo.

Pankaj discussed returning to the stage with Hindustan Times. Before the pandemic, I was confident before concerts. However, the pandemic proved psychologically difficult. Despite practicing riyaaz daily and trying to avoid rust, I was rarely on stage or in front of an audience. I was anxious to perform at Rampur (Uttar Pradesh) after two years.
